Sand and Thread

May 25, 2009

There’s a war going on in our household right now, and i’m not sure which substance will win. A fine layer of play sand coats every surface, evidence of the children’s continuing delight in the sandbox (yeah). Likewise, there are blue threads EVERYWHERE, since I furiously assembled my newly-arrived pattern
wrap dress pattern (Did I mention my patterns arrived?)

to produce this:

Or, for a more steady look at it, see it on Debbie:

Needless to say, it’s been a crazy time at our house.  great, but crazy.  i’ve had some creative stuff on the go:

agatha-posey skirt

a skirt for agatha, and my continuing obsession with drawing on my running t-shirts:

also, this weekend, The King of Mountain Bike Cool, aka Marshall Cant, aka my dad, rolled into town for the NorthShore Bike Fest.  Photo op with grandbabies:

buppa and kidsit was pretty sweet to be up on the deck overlooking the show.  it was likewise sweet that dad gave me some of the famous Peet’s Coffee.  (Check out the way he wrapped it for the journey home.  classic dad.  love it.

so, there you have it.  a few of the things i’ve been up to, described in a totally chaotic and random fashion.  largely explained by small monkey-like child sitting on lap, alternately trying to attack keyboard, and pestering to watch the cake decorating timelapse, which i have promised he may watch for the hundreth time, once i’ve finished furiously posting.

for my Question o’ the day:  when you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Jenn: love the photos – they make me want to pull out my machine again – and I haven’t felt that urge in years. I love the photo of the kids with Dad. He was really pleased to be able to spend even a little bit of time with them – and to give the ‘duck’ another story to tell.
I distinctly remember being in grade 3 and wanting to be a vet. Does it count that as an adult I live in a zoo????

Your talent always amazes me … love, love the dress! Hmm… actually, I never wanted to be anything when I was a kid (talk about dreaming big!). What does that say about me?!

I love the dress! In the picture of you wearing it, it looks like Debbie is moving out of the sun room to come get you, and get the dress back!

As I child I always wanted to be, and assumed I would be, a famous pop singer. Talent be damned. I think the makers of Rock Band/Guitar Hero either a)had this same dream or b)know a lot of people who did.

  4. I wanted to be a snowbird, can you say base brat!
    love the dress!!!
    talk soon.

I think it’s great that you have the time, talent and inclination to make such lovely clothes for yourself and your loved ones. That dress is really gorgeous on you, especially in person.

As for the childhood dream, I had a more realistic, but still totally unrealized, wish to be a singing teacher. In my freshman year of college I had to decide whether to go into art or music, and I decided to go into art, because I didn’t want to spoil the fun of music. Seriously.

jenn – I love the dress; and the skirt for Agatha; and the t-shirts! Somewhere in my crafts room I have fabric pens and things I bought from Michael’s to draw on years ago – maybe I’ll bring it out when Lisa and Aurora visit.
When I was 8 years old I was teaching other kids in my neighborhood the alphabet and how to write in my “school” in the garage. And when I was 12 I had a preschool on Saturdays for the neighborhood kids in my backyard. I guess there was no secret about what I wanted to be.

I forgot to tell you; when I saw the photo of the Peet’s coffee that said “Major D’s” I looked for it at the supermarket. I found it; so I’ll try it out. Also; Lisa made Chowdy Doody (is that right?) soup for me when I visited and I loved it.

I wanted to be quarterback for the LA Raiders or a marine biologist or a caveman. In the end I split the difference and became a clinical counselor – go figure.
